Q&A with Professor Nick Crofts, Program Director of LEPH2025

As we approach LEPH2025, we spoke with Professor Nick Crofts, Program Director, about what makes this year’s conference particularly significant, the key discussions on the horizon, and why those working at the intersection of law enforcement and public health should be part of it.

GLEPHA: What are you most looking forward to at LEPH2025?

Nick: The real strength of the LEPH conferences has always been the diversity of voices in the room. LEPH2025 will bring together researchers, practitioners, policymakers, and community leaders from around the world, all working to strengthen the relationship between law enforcement and public health. These are not isolated discussions; they’re grounded in real-world challenges, and that’s what makes them so valuable. I look forward to seeing the exchange of ideas that happens when people from different disciplines and backgrounds come together with a shared purpose.

GLEPHA: What do you see as the most pressing issues that will be discussed this year?

Nick: There are several critical issues that require our urgent attention. Intimate Partner Violence and other violence prevention, mental health and co-response models, harm reduction, pandemic preparedness – and many others; and especially as they affect the more vulnerable and marginalised in our communities. These challenges are not new, but the way we approach them needs to evolve. One of the key goals of LEPH2025 is to move beyond theoretical discussions and focus on evidence-based strategies that lead to meaningful change.

GLEPHA: What would you say to those considering submitting an abstract or proposal?

Nick: LEPH2025 is not just for academics – it’s for anyone working in this space who has insights, experiences, or solutions to share. Whether you are involved in frontline service delivery, research, advocacy, or policy, your perspective is valuable. The conference thrives on interdisciplinary dialogue, and we actively encourage submissions that challenge existing paradigms, showcase innovative interventions, or highlight areas where collaboration is needed. If you are considering submitting an abstract, I would strongly encourage you to do so as this is an opportunity to contribute to a global conversation that has real-world implications.

GLEPHA: Any final thoughts for those planning to attend?

Nick: LEPH2025 is an opportunity to be part of a growing global movement that recognises the links between law enforcement and public health. The challenges we face require collective action, and the conference provides a space to connect, and learn from others. I look forward to welcoming both new and returning participants in Ottawa this July.
